Many of the medicinal mushrooms, including chaga mushroom, maitake mushroom, ganoderma mushroom, and cordyceps mushroom, contain cancer-preventive and cancer-fighting actions. Research has focused on the polysaccharides with beta 1,3 glucan linkages. Indole-3-carbinol is a nutrient found in large quantities in cruciferous vegetables. It is a potent antagonist of breast cancer, reducing formation of cancerous compounds from hormones and participating in blockage of cancer cell progression.
- The One Earth Herbal Sourcebook: Everything You Need to Know About Chinese, Western, and Ayurvedic Herbal Treatments by Alan Keith Tillotson, Ph.D., A.H.G., D.Ay.

Other mushroom extracts that have been shown to have clinical effectiveness against human cancers are D-fraction extracted from the Maitake mushroom, and extracts from the split gill, turkey tail and Reishi mushrooms. In 1998, Maitake Products received FDA approval for an Investigational New Drug Phase II pilot study of maitake mushroom extract in the treatment of advanced breast and prostate cancer. There is also some evidence that the consumption of mushrooms in the diet may ward off cancer.
- You Don’t Have to be Afraid of Cancer Anymore by Bill Sardi

As with many of the medicinal mushrooms, Shiitake has been shown to be of benefit as an adjuvant cancer therapy. It has been shown to improve specific immune markers (including natural killer cells, tumor necrosis factor, T-helper cells, and a variety of interleukins), and patient outcomes.
- The Health Benefits Of Medicinal Mushrooms by Mark Stengler

Reishi is one of the most versatile medicinal mushrooms. It has long been used in Asia as an energy tonic to promote longevity and overall health. Studies indicate that reishi is an antioxidant and contains polysaccharides and other compounds that may boost the immune system. Reishi is taken to counter bacteria and viruses and has shown promise as an agent to help prevent or treat cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, and other conditions. Russian researchers at the Cancer Research Center in Moscow have had positive results using reishi extracts to boost the immunity of cancer patients.

fda Picture this: you head to your local pharmacy to pick up a prescription from your doctor. When you get the bottle from the pharmacist, there’s a message somewhere on it: “FDA Approved.” That means the FDA — the US Food and Drug Administration — has given your medicine the “green light.” Ostensibly, this stuff is safe to consume, and will actually do what it says it does.

But what if the bottle doesn’t have an FDA mark? In fact, what if — as is the case with every herbal supplement you’ll find in a grocery store, drug store, or your Gano Excel affiliate — there’s a notice specifically saying, “These statements have NOT been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.” What would you do then?

Way back in 1994, Congress required the FDA to set manufacturing standards for all dietary and herbal supplements. Now, our buddies at the FDA don’t prevent the production or selling of untested supplements — but they do place strict limits on advertising. Companies that produce supplements cannot make specific claims about the how their products can treat, prevent or cure any diseases, even if they really can treat, prevent or cure a disease. They aren’t even allowed to claim any direct health benefits; they can only allude to them. The FDA deems anything that can treat, prevent or cure diseases is a drug, and must go through the lengthy and expensive drug approval process.

And let us tell you, that can take a loooong time. A company that develops a drug for human consumption must first be able to prove scientifically that the drug is safe (mainly through animal testing — you know, all those poor monkeys, rabbits, and lab mice). Then, the drug has to get FDA approval to begin tests in humans. From there it’s progress reports, risk assessments, all that jazz — and sometimes, even after all that, stuff gets buried or confused. For instance, some people saw links between antidepressant Prozac and an elevated risk of suicide in teenagers — but the drug was still on the market, even as our children were at risk. (Click here to read a BBC article on the subject.)

This testing process can cost millions of dollars, leaving most supplement companies unable to even dream of filing their product as a drug.

Although this policy aims to prevent supplement companies from making false or misleading claims, it can also prevent consumers from easily identifying potential health benefits from truly effective supplements. pillsAs a result, many consumers are not aware of the many commercially available supplements that can treat their medical conditions cheaply and safely, unless supplements are prescribed by their doctor. This whole thing seems a bit ridiculous.

In a perfect world, supplement manufacturers would be able to discuss more clearly just what their products can do. However, the reality is that many companies are willing to promise more than they can deliver, and as such, FDA standards serve an important “watchdog” function. By following FDA policies, Gano Excel is unable to get the message out to consumers of the potential of their ganoderma-infused products to treat, prevent or cure many diseases. Instead we can merely state that the products promote good health. Yet customers who have had remarkable health results can’t help but tell others and by word of mouth, the amazing power of the Gano Excel products is told.

But let’s be clear: we here at Gano Excel understand and believe that the FDA does serve a vital role in protecting the people of the United States. The FDA ensures that supplement products are free from pesticides, microbes, and metals. The FDA also polices the industry to ensure truth in labeling, which means that the ingredients listed on the supplement label match the ingredients of the product. The FDA testing and labeling restrictions have been put in place to ensure safety for consumers, through rigid standards of testing, advertising, and product approval. The FDA is designed to not only approve products but also to ensure that no false guarantees are promised in advertising.

Gano Excel adheres to FDA regulations faithfully, and follows the guiding principles of the FDA. Gano Excel has maintained a Good Manufacturing Practices certification which actually exceeds the health and safety standards of the FDA. Gano Excel also welcomes (and actively invites) the scrutiny of their operations by their customers, as they are backed by an impressive health and safety record.

Coffee-SongsIt’s an old cliché: the harried artist up late at night, frantically working on their latest masterpiece and downing cup after cup of hot coffee to stay awake and focused. Whether it’s the rich taste or its potent buzz, coffee has inspired writers, musicians, and painters for centuries – and will consider to do so for as long as it’s around!

Songwriters in particular have been very vocal about celebrating the virtues of Gano’s beverage o’ choice. Here’s a brief round-up of songs inspired by/written about coffee!

Did you know J.S. Bach (1685 – 1750), the famous German composer, was a coffee fiend? Click here to listen to the percolating strings of his ‘Coffee Cantata’ and you’ll know – no-one could write something that fast and complex without a whole mess of caffeine!

Old Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra, charted a hit in 1946 with “The Coffee Song” (click here to listen). It’s got one of our favorite lines of all time:

A politician’s daughter was accused of drinking water
And fined a great big fifty-dollar bill
They’ve got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil

Bob Dylan sang “One More Cup of Coffee” on his 1976 album Desire. Click here to listen to the song that proves once and for all that no matter how down on his luck a person might be, they’ll always have that need for java!

On a much lighter note, we’ve got to mention The Manhattan Transfer’s “Java Jive” (Click here to listen). Laid back and sweet, The Manhattan Transfer’s song’s simple refrain “I love coffee, I love tea/I love the Java, and it loves me” – a sentiment we’re sure many of you all out there can get behind, especially when that first commissions check comes in!

Husky American songstress Julie London recorded our favorite version of the standard “Black Coffee” (Click here to listen). This classic tune, penned by Sonny Burke and Paul Francis Webster, once again takes a look at the darker side of java – the lonesome singer consoles herself with cup after cup of black coffee after her she “catches the blues.” Jazz chanteuse Sarah Vaughan charted with her version of the song in 1949, and Peggy Lee made it a staple of her live act in the 1960s!

And rounding out our list, British New Wavers Squeeze with “Black Coffee in Bed!” (Click here to listen.)

Wow, that’s quite a list! Maybe Gano should start setting up outside of music schools!

competitionWe hate to play that old “We told ya so!” game… except when we’re playing it with big corporate America!

On June 5th, Reuters, the premier news service, ran an article about the “instant coffee war” between Starbucks and Nescafé (click here to read that article). In the face of crippling financial hits, Starbucks introduced the VIA instant coffee line. In an article for The Huffington Post, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz explained his decision to introduce his gourmet instant coffee:

There are numerous logical reasons: the significant size of the instant coffee market ($17B globally); the increasing mobility of consumers (imagine a cup of Starbucks VIA Ready Brew on a mountaintop); and, regardless of our ubiquity, that customers continue to tell us they want more Starbucks, and more ways and opportunities to enjoy it. (our emphasis)

The decision really ripped Nescafé’s sachet, as they’ve held the lion’s share of the (non-directly sold) at-home coffee market since who knows when. Things started getting nasty when Nescafé launched a guerilla advertising campaign against VIA, including smear posters and hits against the brand’s flavor and affordability. They’re even placing anti-VIA posters at bus stops! (Click here for a photo.)

It looks like Nescafé and Starbucks are just waking up to something we’ve been talking about for a while now: there’s is a huge demand for gourmet coffee people can make at home. (Click here to view an abstract for an in-depth market study on how prevalent instant coffee is becoming internationally!)

What’s clear is that affordability, as much as taste, has become a determining factor in winning people over to a gourmet instant coffee.

Now, remember that our autoship customers get their 100% organic instant coffee for $18.75 per 30 sachet box; that equals out to a measly $.63 per cup! Compare that to a 12 stick pack of Nescafé, currently on sale at Amazon.com for $12.16, or a 12 pack of Starbucks Via, which will sell for $9.95. OK, that’s an awful lot of numbers going on there; look at it this way –

  • Starbucks Via: 12 cups / $ 9.95 = $.82/cup
  • Nescafé: 12 cups/ $12.16 = $.98/cup
  • Ganocafé Classic: 30 cups/ $18.75 = $.63/cup*

product_shot_classicThat’s a huge savings! And remember; we’re just talking about the coffee. We haven’t even gotten into Ganoderma Lucidum, the amazing herbal ingredient that enriches every sachet of coffee  we sell. With even Nescafé touting the health benefits of coffee (click here to read that), there’s never been a better time to boost your wealth with the unique fusion of at-home coffee and whole-person wellness Gano Excel represents.

To add to the benefits, Ganocafé Classic is 100% organic; that’s right, an organic instant coffee! Consumer demand is high for organic instant coffee, but none of the other major providers seem able to get it into coffee drinkers’ hands.

oatmealWhen we think about oatmeal, we may picture brisk autumn days and big sweaters. With the temperature rising and people beginning to worry about their “beach bodies,” oatmeal’s probably the last thing on your mind. I mean, who wants a warm breakfast in the summer heat? But as it turns out, whole-grain oats be just the thing for preparing you for summer fun. Now, anyone who’s tried our Gano C’Real Spirulina Oats know they’re are a delicious, wholesome way to kick-start your morning; but did you know that their powerful pairing of 100+ phytonutrients with appetite-stabilizing steel-cut oats may also help in the Battle of the Bulge?

In an article for Your Total Health, Nutritionist Sophie Pachella notes that “oats have the ability to stabilize blood sugar levels and keep you regular, two helpful weight control aids.” She also insists that eating oats can “lower cholesterol,” a statement confirmed by the (notoriously overly-cautious) US Food and Drug Administration. Weight loss expert John Hartie explains, “Simply by consuming oatmeal, the body should naturally go into a fat burning mode, resulting in the utilization of fatty cells for energy, support, and body functioning” (click here for article). In other words, steel-cut oats fill you up without filling you out, and support vital body functions that enable weight loss!

The two “magic ingredients” in Gano C’Real – Spirulina and Ganoderma Lucidum – kick oatmeal’s natural weight-loss power to the next level. Both herbs are what nutritionists call “superfoods,” veggies and fruits that provide an awesome number of vital phytonutrients. WebMD’s article on phytonutrients chronicle the scores of health benefits of a phytonutrient-rich diet, all of which may help boost body functions relating to your metabolism.

Each sachet of Gano C’Real Spirulina Oats contains an almost magical combination of Ganoderma Lucidum, the superfood Spirulina, and healthful steel-cut oats – all at only 110 calories. Pair a bowl of the C’Real with maximum performance-booster Ginseng Tongkat Ali – whose ingredients may also help you watch your waistline – and you’ve got a wellness-boosting breakfast that simply can’t be beat!

Folk Remedies

magazine.1Did your grandma ever whip up a plaster made of stuff from her garden and around the kitchen? Did anyone ever tell you to eat chicken soup when you have the flu?

There’s a whole body of information — sometimes called “common” knowledge — that has been passed down generation-to-generation. For centuries in the West, university-certified doctors were a luxury of the upper classes; the rest of us just had to make do with what we had. The lower and middle classes set their own bones, bled their own veins, and pulled their own teeth. An essential tool in these homespun doctors’ tool kits was herbs and other vegetation reputed to have healing powers.

Now, it’s the 21st-century, and those of us blessed enough to have health insurance can see legitimate, university-certified doctors regularly, at a relatively low cost. Indeed, we have witnessed the victory of a certain kind of medicine, allopathic (what your usual internist likely prescribes to), over another kind, homeopathic (what we’ve been doing for centuries). And this is a very good thing: life expectancy is up, infant mortality is down, and no-one has to stick a live frog in their mouth when they have sore throat. Laboratory-manufactured medicines and advanced medical equipment have improved the standard of life for the great mass of people. However, it would be foolish to ignore the centuries of success our ancestors saw using homeopathic solutions to medical problems.

Increasingly, allopathic doctors are looking to homeopathic knowledge — that “common knowledge” our ancestors had to rely on — for solutions to common medical problems. They understand that you can’t “throw out the baby with the bathwater,” that potentially valuable cures could be lost if we ignore centuries of trial-and-error experiments with various herbs, roots, and fungii.

Take the case of Alexander Fleming, the man who discovered Penicillin. Dr. Fleming didn’t reveal the therapeutic benefits of Penicillium fungi by randomly licking toadstools and seeing which one made him feel better. Instead, he recognized that peasants had, for centuries, been brewing a broth from moldy fruits and breads that was successfully applied to open wounds to stop infection. Alexander Fleming explained why what the peasants were doing worked, in allopathic terms — but it would have continued working whether he explained it that way or not.

Ganoderma lucidum, the “Miraculous King of Herbs” that enriches Gano Excel’s beverages and dietary supplements, has also been used by common folk to deal with ailments for centuries. Western medical research has only scratched the surface of this powerful herb’s therapeutic benefits; we invite further objective, academic investigation and research, because we want widespread verification of what we already know to be true. Gano Excel is the world’s leading manufacturer of organic Ganoderma lucidum, and each and every one of us truly believe in the beneficial powers of our product.

It’s not too often we get to do honest, side-by-side comparisons; but with McDonald’s throwing up billboards for its new Iced Mocha all around Southern California — and we’re sure wherever you are — we decided to give it a go. Our Mocha versus Theirs; Café 2.0 versus McCafé. Sound the alarms, it’s gonna be a brawl!

Here is the nutrition information for a small Café 2.0 Ganocafé Mocha:

ganocafe_mocha_nutrition_facts
And here’s a small McCafé Mocha:

mccafe_mocha_nutrition_facts

Source: McDonald’s USA Nutrition Facts

OK, we don’t usually do the Internet slang thing — this is a classy blog, you all! — but…OMG! Café 2.0 is the hands-down winner versus McCafé! K.O. in the first round, ladies and gents! A stunning victory!

One guilt-free GanoCafe Mocha contains 150 fewer calories than a small McCafe Mocha, and less than half the fat! You can sip on those other numbers at your own pace, but it’s clear that if you’re worried about your waistline, Café 2.0 Ganocafé Mocha is the only choice.

Taste? Well, there’s really no comparison. We’ve been in the coffee biz for a LITTLE longer than McDonald’s; but you won’t see us going after their market share on french fries anytime soon.

Please note, we won that little bout without even mentioning Ganoderma Lucidum (links out University of Wisconsin-Madison’s article on the subject), the powerful superfood that enriches every guilt-free mocha we sell. And at under a dollar a cup, Café 2.0 Ganocafé Mocha fattens your wallet while it slims you down!

So, all fast food sellers be forewarned: you guys stick to burgers, ‘cos we’ve got the coffee corner covered!

One of our favorite bits of slang around the Gano Excel offices is “a cup of joe,” meaning (in our case) a piping hot mug of one of our perfectly-brewed Café 2.0 products. But much as we use the expression, nobody could quite figure where it came from. So, we did some research…and it just confused us more!

OK, picture this. It’s an early morning in the 1800s, and we’re on the deck of great British naval ship. The sailors are clamoring around an earthenware jar marked, weirdly, “SRD.” Whatever’s in there, they want it – bad. Someone opens the jar, and the sailors rush to forward with their tin cups. They take a sip, and they’re in heaven.

What were our sailors waiting for? Well, I’ll give you a hint: “SRD” stands for “Service Rum Department.” Yeah, you read right, rum – “Got a little Captain in you?”/Pirates of the Caribbean grog.

rumAccording to Charles Coulombe, author of Rum: The Epic Story of the Drink That Conquered the World, “each battalion [of the British Royal Navy] was issued its own supply of rum, drawn from the three hundred gallons given each twenty-thousand-man division.” (Click here to read more on Google Books!) Nelson’s blood, Demon Water, Navy Neaters, Barbados Water, Screech – whatever you call it, rum rationing caused for one bleary-eyed navy. (Those this is the same Navy that single-handedly took down the mighty Spanish Armada, so maybe it wasn’t so bad!)

JoeThe tradition was picked up by the US Navy, and remained a staple of our naval life until President Woodrow Wilson’s Secretary of the Navy issued General Order 99 on 1 June 1914, prohibiting all alcohol on board ships and thus killing the rum ration. They replaced the rum ration with a coffee ration, and we had a much more alert (and much less prone to Sailing Under the Influence) navy. The name of the Secretary of the Navy? Josephus “Joe” Daniels – hence, a “cup of joe.”

It’s an awesome story, and it makes total sense. There’s only one problem – it’s not true.

Turns out that, according to our myth-busting hero Barbara Mikkelson over at Snopes.com, “cup of joe” doesn’t come into popularity until 1933 – way after ol’ Josephus rained on our sailors’ parade with General Order 99. She says,

There are…stronger theories for how “coffee” came to be “joe”…The first asserts that “joe” is a corruption of one of two other slang words for coffee: java and jamoke, the latter itself a compression of java and mocha. Under that theory, a “cup of jamoke” could easily have slip-slid its way into being a “cup of joe.” People do love to shorten their slang terms, after all. (Link to original article at Snopes.com)

It just goes to show: sometimes the most appealing story isn’t the one you want to take to the bank. So enjoy your cup of jamoke, and remember: sometimes fact checking is your best friend!
